If you know me well, you know that I like to be VERY ORGANISED.
So much so, it feels like I’ve been packing for the London Marathon for about a week now!
I am very fortunate that my Grandparents live in London so will be staying with them the night prior to the race, so my alarm clock won’t be too early and can have a relaxed morning surrounded by close ones, trying to keep me sane in a comforting and familiar environment.
The London Marathon organisers are very kind to give us a bag to take with us to the start line to retrieve at the end to keep all essentials in!
My packing list is rather extensive as I am staying over the night prior, (I am also female and ship my life around with me wherever I go), however I thought I would also put together a list of some my essentials for post race and some for those first time runners!
WHAT’S IN MY MARATHON KIT BAG?
- FLIP FLOPS
Post 26.2 miles your feet will thank you for comfy footwear! Be wary of any potential blisters if it’s a hot day so flip flops aren’t always ideal. Pack some vaseline to prepare your feet before hand.
My trust Havianas are packed already!
- FACE WIPES
Salty face post marathon, no thanks. Nice clean face for any photos with your medal.
- COMFORTABLE CLOTHING
After the marathon, you will only want your comfiest clothing going. Nothing tight as you will be hot and clammy.
Usually leggings is my preference or shorts in warmer weather. A baggy T-Shirt is always good or if you want to gloat further, then the finishers T-Shirt you get in your goodie bag is also a good one.
- SPARE UNDERWEAR
As above, you will want to change after the race. Clean underwear for the win!
- ENERGY BAR/SNACKS
After the marathon there is a lot going on and to take in. Despite this, also make sure to recover well. It will make tomorrow less painful. You do get a goodie bag with treats, but be prepared and take your own to avoid any disappointment and help ease the muscles in the morning. Due to the atmosphere and everything else going on, it may take a while to get a decent meal in!

- MOBILE PHONE
I won’t be running with my phone this year. In 2014 I took it for music, but have decided against it this time. Preferably take an old phone, it will be needed to contact friends and family once you have finished as there will be a lot of people around.
Also good to get those first pictures in to upload quickly to Instagram and Facebook to let everyone know how you got on.
- WATER & HYDRO TABS
HYDRATE HYDRATE HYDRATE! Say no more.. Ensure you replace the electrolytes lost during the race. They also give out Lucozade at the London Marathon so this is a good alternative if you don’t have any.
Just in case you pick up any nasty blisters on the way round.
Mop up any remaining sweat or if it’s a wet day to dry yourself off.
- JUMPER FOR THE START
It can be a little chilly at the start line especially if in the shade.
Take an old jumper or bin liner to keep warm with and throw to the side just before the race starts. The London Marathon donate all jumpers to charity which have been left in the starting pens.
As I travel into London I will be listening to my favourite music to keep me focused and ‘in the zone’. Upbeat music always lifts my spirits too! Combats the nerves and turns the energy into positive adrenaline.
- SUN TAN LOTION
If it’s a warm day, running for 3 – 6 hours can expose you to some lovely burns! If you do end up catching the sun, at least protect yourself first.
I never run with glasses, but when travelling to the start if it’s a nice day, why not?
- RACE INSTRUCTIONS
If you know me well, then you know that my sense of direction is atrocious.
The race instructions have all of the relevant travel information on so I can’t get lost, especially if the phone signal is congested once you’ve finished.
- RUNNING NUMBER, CHIP & SAFETY PINS
I would strongly advice attaching your chip and number to you before you head off to the Marathon start. But extra safety pins are always ideal!
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE RUNNING THE LONDON MARATHON THIS WEEKEND!!
- Enjoy it! It’s one of the best races out there and we’re all very lucky to be taking part
- Slow and steady at the start, don’t rush out too quickly!
- Soak up the atmosphere, it’s electric
- Use the crowds to get you through those last few miles
- Think of the post race CELEBRATIONS!!
